Abstract

This study explores the adaptation of traditional rituals among the Toba Batak community in Tanjung Uban, specifically in North Bintan Regency, Riau Islands. The Toba Batak people who migrated outside their homeland brought with them cultural values and traditions, including the performance of traditional rituals that remain an essential part of their social life. The purpose of this research is to understand the forms of adaptation that occur in the traditional rituals of the Toba Batak community within a multicultural environment and to examine Dalihan Na Tolu as a kinship framework that binds the Batak community together. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal several forms of adaptation in traditional rituals, including adjustments in the timing of implementation, food selection, venue choice, and the involvement of non-Batak participants. The factors influencing these adaptations include geographical conditions, the role of Raja Parhata (traditional leaders), social interactions with the local community, and the necessity of maintaining interethnic harmony. These adaptations do not diminish the essence of Toba Batak cultural values but instead demonstrate cultural flexibility in responding to social dynamics within the diaspora context.
